Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Directed by Robert Zemekis this is a film that not many believed in, the concept of having both animation and live actors on screen seemed impossible to almost everyone in the film industry.

Charles Fleischer voices Roger Rabbit, a cartoon rabbit framed for the murder of Marvin Acme who Roger initially thought was playing ‘pattycake’ with his wife Jessica Rabbit. The voice of sultry redhead Jessica Rabbit comes from Kathleen Turner however only Amy Irving, who played Jessica’s singing voice was credited.

Filming only went ahead after filmmakers convinced Disney and Amblin executives with a short test involving Roger bumping into crates in an alleyway and being picked up by a version of Valiant.

The film features Bob Hoskins as Eddie Valiant, a detective hired by Roger to snoop on his wife Jessica, and, Christopher Lloyd as Judge Doom the feared judge of Toon Town who passes capital punishment on any toon who breaks the law and eventually the sadistic villain who tries to kill Roger Rabbit. The part of Judge Doom is rather terrifying but brilliant all the same.

This film was the first and only time that characters from Warner Brothers and Disney appeared on screen together and it was also the most expensive film from the 1980’s with a budget of $70 million.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit was one of my favourite films growing up, it brought all the much loved cartoon characters back together on one screen in a hilarious animation. The amount of time and effort that went into the making of this film most definitely paid off and it will always be an iconic film, proven with its three Oscars.
