This was an 80’s film I was wary about watching as it is renowned for its emotional story line and I am a very emotional person. However, as I am on a mission it had to be watched, and, as always this film features both Corey Feldman and Kiefer Sutherland.
The main plotline of this film is four twelve year old boys who set off on a two-day journey to find the body of a missing boy so that they will get to be on television and praised for finding his body. It does become clear however that this film is actually about the boys own journey of self-discovery rather than their physical journey.
All of these boys have a reason for going on the journey. Chris wants to be seen for something good rather than causing a fight or getting into trouble, Teddy wants to rid himself of his ‘crazy’ stereotype and his abusive father who burned Teddy’s ear off on a hot stove, Gordie wants to be seen as useful and not just the ‘quiet boy’ that trails behind his friends, and Vern wants his mum to stop treating him as though he is invisible and to accept that his brother is dead.
This film is packed full of life lessons and would most definitely bring a tear to anyone’s eye, the acting from the four young men is phenomenal and I would insist that anyone who has read this blog post to watch Stand by Me as you will most definitely not be disappointed.
